Amazon Announces Major AI and Cloud Investment in India with Long-Term Impact Goals

Amazon has unveiled a strategic plan to invest $12.7 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in India by 2030, reinforcing its support for the Government of India’s national AI initiative.

Under this roadmap, the company intends to make AI capabilities widely available to local businesses and educational communities. A key objective is empowering 15 million small and medium-sized businesses with advanced AI tools that simplify tasks such as online selling and operations. At the same time, Amazon plans to introduce AI literacy and career exposure to 4 million government-school students over the next several years.

Investing in Local Cloud and AI Foundations
The $12.7 billion commitment focuses on expanding India’s cloud and AI infrastructure, particularly through Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in states such as Telangana and Maharashtra. Amazon says this expansion responds to growing demand for cloud services among both public and private sector organizations. Since 2017, AWS has delivered cloud skills training to over 6.2 million people in India through various programs.

Tools for Business Growth
To deepen digital participation, Amazon is deploying a suite of AI-based tools within its seller ecosystem. These include enhanced capabilities in Seller Assistant and Seller Central that help automate product listing creation, offer performance insights, and support task management. Early adoption indicators suggest sellers benefit from generative listing features that produce high-quality product content from simple inputs.

AI in Education and Skill Development
Part of Amazon’s agenda is to partner with educational stakeholders to introduce AI curriculum elements, hands-on learning modules, and teacher support aligned with the National Education Policy 2020. The goal is to prepare students not just to understand AI fundamentals, but to apply them in solving real-world challenges.

Enhanced Customer Experiences
On the consumer side, Amazon is scaling AI-driven shopping features on its platform, including visual search, augmented reality previews, and AI-assisted discovery and comparison tools. These enhancements are aimed at making online shopping more intuitive, especially for first-time or digitally-novice users.

Overall, Amazon’s investment underscores its long-term commitment to bolstering India’s digital ecosystem through infrastructure, skills, and technology adoption.
